This being my first Anthony Horowitz book I am unable to tell if I actually like him as an author. I admit he did a splendid job on this Sherlock Holmes book - one that I am sure Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud of - however I truly believe that Horowitz was following closely to a scripted and well known account of exactly what the past Sherlock Holmes novels entailed. And although this story was good, he had a basic outline to follow in the way Holmes went about solving his crimes.

I have never been a fan of Sherlock Holmes. I attempted the Hound of Baskervilles way back in my university days but I couldn't wrap my brain around the quirkiness of Holmes' personality. The historical time frame was lost on me and I generally found it to be more work than pleasure.
But this was a completely different experience. Is it Horowitz' writing style? Is it the awesome audio rendition by Derek Jacobi? Is it just my maturity and willingness to step out of my comfort zone? Or is it becaus ...more

Entertaining, and of the style of the earlier Holmes.
The narration of the audio by Derek Jacobi was a definite plus for me.
I felt like it was very much in the earlier Sherlock Holmes style, which i have read a bit of in the past, but never been a huge fan. Having Holmes show off how clever he is with the clues before him, that we are often not a party too. Still the book sped by and I'm happy to have read it, its one of the perks of doing group reads, committing to books I wouldn't necessarily ...more

I don’t know what I loved more - the return of Holmes or narrator Derek Jacobi’s performance in this audiobook version. No one else could have read this Victorian mystery as masterfully as he. Normally, I’m not impressed with a new author taking over the reins from the original author (exception Kyle Mills taking over for the late Vince Flynn), but in this case, I really, really enjoyed this story told from Dr. Watson’s perspective looking back fondly on a case with his friend, Sherlock Holmes.

The Conan Doyle estate commissioned this novel from this author. He tells one of Sherlock Holmes's adventures from the point of view of Dr. Watson, one previously unpublished. It is a complex tale and puts Holmes up against pure evil and a group dedicated to his destruction. It is well written. I'm not familiar enough with the originals to know if a reader could be fooled into thinking that this is an original, but I really enjoyed it.

Loved the narrator (Derek Jacobi). But there were times when I just wasn't following the story, and I didn't care enough to re-wind and try to figure out what I had missed. This was Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, so the characters were quite familiar. Yet the story seemed to be just layer upon layer of coincidence (and red herrings), and a completely disjointed mystery/crime arc. So it was fine for killing time on a long drive in that it was better than talk radio, but that may not be saying mu
