What Members Thought

A brilliantly written tale from Depression era Kentucky; this was one of those rare books that made me laugh and cry in equal measure. There wasn’t a part of it I didn’t like. What stuck me most about this book was how feminist oriented it was, without being fully aware of it. Five strong women from seemingly different backgrounds band together to break the moulds set for them.

So many good reviews have already been written about this book so I will just say that I loved it. 4 stars but maybe another .5 just for the title. In chapter 9 there is part of a poem by Amy Lowell called The Giver of Stars.
Hold your soul open for my welcoming.
Let the quiet of your spirit bathe me
With its clear and rippled coolness,
That, loose-limbed and weary, I find rest,
Outstretched upon your peace, as on a bed of ivory
So I immediately ordered a book of poetry by Amy Lowell.

Hum. This was ok, but I didn’t fall in love with it. While I love reading historical fiction and especially that which is based in Kentucky and in Appalachia, I found the historical focus on the packhorse librarians lacking. The focus was more on settling up very dramatic characters and situations that, in my opinion, detracted from the historical fiction this book is labeled.
