This is one of those "truth is stranger than fiction" stories. Who would have thought that the prim and proper Oxford English Dictionary would have owed its existence, in large part, to a convicted murderer who was also a paranoid schizophrenic? I am a bit ambivalent on this book. There were parts that I really liked, then others that I thought were just place fillers. The verbiage, often reminiscent of Old English, was refreshing and educational. But I felt the story tended to veer off from time to time and encompass more than was necessary to tell the tale of it's protagonists and it's central issue.

What an interesting book about the making of the Oxford dictionary! It was a book club read and we had a pretty interesting discussion. The story of the two main characters, especially the "madman" was fascinating. Highly recommend this book!
