So good! I loved Kya and her free spirit (strangeness) and the quality relationships she did have with a few folk. I really loved the nature part of the book and all the descriptions: the marsh, the wildlife, the plants, the shell and feather collecting, the water, everything! I recently read My Absolute Darling which also had a lot of nature and survivalism in it, and sometimes this reminded me of that one, which was good, but with a grittier story. This was by far better. The trial part almost ...more

This was a wonderful book from beginning to end with its unique setting and character. I started it as an ebook and finished listening to the audiobook and I would recommend the audiobook.

This took me a few tries, but I got into it on this go.

I'm not really sure how this one wound up on everyone's reading lists, but I did enjoy it. It kept me guessing on the mystery part of it.

Best book I have read in ages.

I'll give this 4 stars for the lovely nature writing, and its evocation of the flora and fauna of the marsh. It's a sweet story, but I wonder if I shouldn't call this a fantasy romance rather than a mystery. The mystery is how the heck does a 6-year-old abandoned child survive in such an environment. As others have also pointed out, there are some geographical absurdities (the author lives in Idaho...), but since I am not that familiar with North Carolina it didn't bother me. The murder mystery ...more

Kya (aka: Marsh Girl) raises herself after everyone in the family leaves her. She learns how to read and write and is published as an expert on the Marsh. She's loved two men, one who leaves her to go to collage and one who later winds up dead. She is convicted of the crime and it goes to court. What will the verdict be? You have to read the book to find out. And, there is a twist at the end that I didn't see coming. ...more

A great read!

A beautiful, touching biological study about friendship, survival and love that endures the times and trials of life. Well written, thoroughly engaging and suspenseful.

Enjoyed the descriptions of the natural area but seriously doubted that a small town where everyone knows who does what would be as heartless as to leave a child on their own year round in a swamp, or that the wealthy side of the family would not help the child out. Too big a leap for me.
