Kya--what to say about this protagonist, known locally as the Marsh Girl? Things start off with such grief and sorrow for her I wasn't sure if I'd finish the book, but the writing is excellent and it's hard not to get drawn into Kya's world. This is the first book this year that's kept me up late, even if it wasn't 5 stars for me.

Kya's mother left first, then her older sisters and brothers, leaving her with her alcoholic, abusive father who shows up from time to time. Eventually he disappears also. She learns to live on her own, surviving in the marsh on the coast of North Carolina. One of my favourite books of the year. Broke me, gave me hope, filled me with tears and sunshine and a hope for a better world. Such a beautiful book.

Kya’s character evolved well. Loved Tate from the very beginning! It would’ve been nice to know why Chase wore the necklace all the time despite all the changes in his life. Perhaps a chapter dedicated for him might’ve provided more clarity.

The book held my attention. Liked Jumpin and Mabel. 4.5 stars because of the missing piece. Why did Chase continue to wear the necklace even after his wedding to another and that too for a year! If it was just about getting Kya for obvious reasons
