After reading so many great reviews for this book I began to wonder if it was going to be as good as everyone said and if I’d enjoy it just as much. Well the answer is no I didn’t enjoy it, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!

This absorbing and atmospheric novel focuses on Kya, who lives on the swampy marshes of North Carolina in the 50's and 60's; a six year old girl abandoned by her family, and ostracized by the nearby community just for being different.

I know I'm in the minority, but I basically thought this story was stupid. I had to suspend belief that this child would really have been able to survive on her own in the marsh for well into adulthood. She didn't break a limb, she didn't get bitten by a snake, she didn't get food poisoning, and on and on. Plus all the adults were written as uncaring and detached, except for Jumpin' and Mabel. Really??? Because Kya was "marsh trash"??? It all seemed way too stereotypical to me. As did the courtr
