A bell jar is a piece of laboratory equipment used to contain vacuum. The Bell Jar is the only novel written by the American writer and poet Sylvia Plath. The novel is semi-autobiographical, originally published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" in 1963, with the names of places and people changed. Plath committed suicide a month after its first UK publication. Pursuant to the wishes of Plath's mother and her husband Ted Hughes, the novel was not published under Plath's name until 1967 and wa ...more

I had tried to read this book several times in the past but I kept setting it aside. I saw an audible book recommendation for it, narrated by Maggie Gyllenhaal. I decided to listen. Maggie Gyllenhaal was excellent! I can't stop thinking about it. Haunting and sad.

This book has been on my TBR list for a long time. My library finally got the audio, so I jumped at the chance to get it. This was a sad little story. The hits to the MC were constant, and always moving in a downward spiral. I could see how she ended up where she was.

This is a tough book to both read and review because it falls within so many different parameters of genres and yet is firmly embedded within the classics.

Plath’s only novel is part autobiographical and deals with mental illness. I wonder how cathartic it was for her to write before her death at aged only thirty.

Within the realm of feminist studies, Plath is a must read. Unlike many other authors, her name is perhaps more widely known than that of her book. I don’t know if I would go so far as

Even though I have a very hectic school life, I still try my best to read books every night. Soooooo. I dont't know, I just think that not being able to read is like being in a bell jar, IN A WAY. Gah. These projects are kind of wrecking my brain right now, I can't think and write logically (not that I always think logically). Can't wait for this semester to end, and then I would be able to read the WHOLE DAY. Now that is really awesome!

Okay, now about "The Bell Jar", superb.
Thank you Sylvia Pla
