The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is a book that I had on my real life shelf for a long time and finally got around to reading it.

I really found this novel a dramatic and touching read. The book follows the in depth struggle of a young woman called Esther Greenwood.
Esther Greenwood, the protagonist of the story, is a mentally unstable young woman and she gradually slips into a dark depression while living in New York. She is tormented with the idea of death and tries to commit suicide, believing th

A semi-autobiographical book by Sylvia Plath (originally written under the pen name Victoria Lucas), is Plath's only novel. She committed suicide shortly after it's publication and it is said that the story mirrors Plath's own struggles with depression, isolation, and her stints in mental asylums.

An amazing semi-autobiographical journey through depression, suicidal thoughts and intention, finally emerging as “cured” (or at least able to live in this world, even if only temporarily). Wow, I thought this book was great. Once I got started it was hard to put down.I thought this book was beautifully written. I thought Esther was a great main character. She was very haunting. Plus the supporting characters were just as great as Esther. It is like even though Ester was the one telling the story, but it was written so well that each character brought its own and helped the story along.

Sorry Kathy, I really liked this book! Guess I am a sucker for a book about depression and suicide-or more so of what goes on in the minds of victims of mental illness...
Sanity is a fragile state of mind! :\
I also think Sylvia Plath's writing is beautiful.
