What Members Thought
I very much liked the historical aspects of looking into the time period and the culture of the day and place (I know virtually nothing about Iceland except that it developed out of the Viking exploration and the Danish empire) but so much of the novel was conjecture and the author's wanting to humanize (victimize?) her character that it made fact and fiction difficult to tell apart. I'd like to be able to push this to a 3.0 rating, but I just can't. I very much wanted to be able to rave about this book. There are passages that are beautifully written, and then there are sections that are just predictable. I've been to Iceland twice, once in the winter for a Valentine's Day long weekend, and if I didn't have a sense of the cold and desolation of Iceland, I'm not sure I would get it from this book. The pronunciation glossary at the beginning was nice, but probably unnecessary
