Although this is a difficult book to read due to the dark subject matter, I love this book. I am going to think about it for a day or so and come back to write the review.
I very much liked the historical aspects of looking into the time period and the culture of the day and place (I know virtually nothing about Iceland except that it developed out of the Viking exploration and the Danish empire) but so much of the novel was conjecture and the author's wanting to humanize (victimize?) her character that it made fact and fiction difficult to tell apart. First time I "read" this book, I listened to the audio version, and, while I thought it was interesting, I found it very bleak, and perhaps I was too distracted by whatever else I was doing as I was listening. This second time I read it, I had the hard copy, and read the words. Even though I knew what was going to happen in the story, I enjoyed the book much more, as I was able to savor the words more.
