A beautifully written novel based on a true story. Burial Rites captivated me with its poetic depiction of a woman condemned to die for a murder she and two others committed. It's a tragic tale told so convincingly that I could feel the coldness of the landscape as well as the deep loneliness of Agnes, the convicted woman. A great read for anyone interested in a lyrical dramatic saga.

Utterly magnificent. I am in awe of Hannah Kent's talent. The writing is lyrically beautiful; metaphors wonderfully portray a haunted and tragic perspective of a woman doomed to die. Kent's research into this Icelandic tale is thorough and she completely immerses you into a dark and ambiguous (physical and emotional) landscape. A real gem of a book - language that you just want to savour and a plot to compulsively draw you in.
