I've pretty much decided that Chris Bohjalian could write about the making of a jet engine and make it interesting enough for me to come back for more. Here he gives us a lesson in sleepwalking and other sleep disorders. Some I already knew about; some I did not, such as how sleepwalking can be passed down from one generation to the next.

I marvel at how prolific a writer Bohjalian is despite the fact that he writes so many different genre of fiction. Just in the past few years I've read historical fiction, social justice fiction and even YA. Now a tight thrilling mystery. What all these have in common is excellent storytelling. I know when I pick up a book of his, I will want to clear my schedule because he'll hook me into his story and never let me go.

This book left me with mixed feelings.
The positives: I learned something about the devestating consequences of parasomnia. I was surprised by the ending, despite the few red herrings offered throughout the story. It would make for an interesting book discussion.
The negatives: I didn't like the characters, feel a connection to them, or have much sympathy for their tradgedy. The family's grief wasn't believable, they seemed disconnected from their mother's/wife's death and rather selfish in their ...more

A woman with an extreme form of sleepwalking, goes missing. Although the plot revolves around the search for answers to what happened to her, the primary attention is on the 21 year old daughter and her romance with one of the detectives on the case. I realize that people grieve differently, but I had a hard time accepting that this young woman who withdraws from college to care for her father and sister in the immediate aftermath of this tragedy would hop into bed with this detective and friend

The end bumped it up to 3 stars for me. Most of the book it was just 2 stars. Very easy read though.
When Annalee Ahlberg, a known sleepwalker, disappears one night and a piece of her nightgown is found next to the river, everyone assumes the worst. Although the basic story idea was interesting, I found the characters unbelievable and difficult to have any sympathy for or relationship with. I often wonder why an author chooses to write a first person novel using a main character of the opposite sex. nothing about Lianna or her actions seemed remotely plausible to me.
Bohjalian does a great job with research and I find myself learning with each book. I've never been to Vermont but feel like I have been there through his writing. The twists were there - just a tad more subtle than some of his others. Still a great read from one of my favorites. I liked the story very much.
