The Language of Flowers is a debut novel by Vanessa Diffenbaugh that has a fresh perspective. The main character is Victoria, a woman who spent the first 18 yrs of her life in the foster care system. Chapters alternate between her voice and the voice of Elizabeth, a foster parent who came close to adopting her when she was 10 yrs old.

This was a beautiful novel about a young woman who grows up in the foster care system. Her history of traumatic experiences and of not having any stable relationships lead her to not trust herself or others in relationships and to be afraid to hope for anything better for herself.
