This was my first book by Anne Tyler and I was pleasantly surprised, even though I found it to be a slower read, which I liked. In the end I appreciated that I could savor reading this endearing story told through multiple generations, about a typical family and all its secrets and challenges. The characters are quirky but memorable, and I liked that there was such a wide range of personalities and how everything seemed so ordinary about them, making it a story almost anyone could find something ...more

***Sort-of mild spoilers***

I can't tell exactly what I thought of this novel, although I enjoyed it each time I "picked it up" (i.e. clicked the "play" button on my audio player). It was not slow at all and while in many parts not much of any real activity was happening per se, the story never lagged or felt slow. I honestly don’t know what to say about this book other than it was just OK. None of the characters were great but I can say Denny was my favorite. The storylines weren’t anything special, although at times a little odd. There just wasn’t anything pulling me in and drawing me back to pick it back up to read. I think that’s why it took so long to finish.

On to the next 😊

This is my first Anne Tyler book. I thoroughly enjoyed her incisive and acerbic use of dialogue and loved the non-chronological structure. I thought the imperfect but generally very likeable range of characters to show the generations and secrets of a family were really effective. I particularly loved Abbie and Red; I just wish the ending had belonged to Red not Denny. There were a few issues that I felt were almost abandoned, especially one set up from the first page, but perhaps this itself is ...more

Beautifully written and an interesting character study that allowed the reader to see inside a 'normal' family. I had a hard time getting through it though as there wasn't enough going on to keep me engaged. This was my first Anne Tyler book and I look forward to reading more by her as she is a talented writer. ...more
