What Members Thought

This book was like a mug of homemade hot cocoa on a winter night; sweet and comforting. I actually found myself looking forward to getting back into this book. Abby Whitshank is the heart of the Whitshank family- a generational story of this family and their house. The house stole the show in my opinion, and my favorite section was about Junior and Linnie May. Heartwarming and reminded me of my own family-- arguments, sibling banter, competition, quirks, and even a shocking twist (IMO)!!

Perhaps I missed something here but I felt this Pulitzer Winner lacked in many ways. In a disjointed, spastic way, we are thrown forward and backward in time, and left trying to piece together the history of a house and the families who lived there. In no chronological order, we learn about the house being built, being sold, being maintained, being furnished and being packed up. We see the family hosting dinners, taking in orphans, keeping secrets, moving back home, grieving and holidaying toget

This is my first Anne Tyler book. I thoroughly enjoyed her incisive and acerbic use of dialogue and loved the non-chronological structure. I thought the imperfect but generally very likeable range of characters to show the generations and secrets of a family were really effective. I particularly loved Abbie and Red; I just wish the ending had belonged to Red not Denny. There were a few issues that I felt were almost abandoned, especially one set up from the first page, but perhaps this itself is

Beautifully written and an interesting character study that allowed the reader to see inside a 'normal' family. I had a hard time getting through it though as there wasn't enough going on to keep me engaged. This was my first Anne Tyler book and I look forward to reading more by her as she is a talented writer.

I was 50 pages in and not loving it, then I had a sleepless night
picked up the book , the story was flowing and I was mesmerized by the
history of the house and its occupants. Making me think of my
relationships and all the things we shared. I love a book that
can open up your bottled up thoughts and feelings.

Your usual Anne Tyler goodness, breathing with the reality of family life. I like that this one was so new, set in the Baltimore of today, although there are parts of the book that skip backwards and forward in time. The character of Denny, I feel, was still unresolved by the end of the book and that irked me. Abby, though, was a classic Anne Tyler character through and through. If you like this author's work, then this is another gem.
