What Members Thought

The only reason I found this book is that the author is a co-host on the Pop Rocket podcast, which I listen to devotedly. And I am so glad this book made its way into my life.
What a beautiful, unexpectedly true book.
Based on the premise, I never thought it would be what it was. Not that I'm sure what that is, exactly: a book about the lies we tell ourselves to comfort ourselves and to feel we are in control? A parable about the beauty and difficulty of ambiguity? One man's redemption story? A fa ...more

I probably took too long to read most of this--just catching dribs and drabs at night right before passing out asleep--because it's much more enjoyable when read in solid chunks, as I did with the last 3rd of the book. Like many readers here, I picked the book up because Wappler co-hosts the excellent Pop Rocket podcast (and she seems to like all the same stuff I like, so she's, like, the avatar for my demographic on that show)--I might not have found my way to the book otherwise. A very moving novel that hit very close to home for me. I didn't get invested until the 2nd part of the story, but when I did it really struck a nerve. I've never wept so much while reading. Thank you, Margaret.

I first became aware of the book because the author is a cohost on one of my favorite podcasts. I honestly didn’t know what to expect of her writing. It turns out it is one of the best and most powerful books I’ve read this year. And I loved it even before (view spoiler)
As she’s an arts and culture writer, it’s not surprising that the book is full of details that place it firmly in its time and place, but she manages to do it without making it feel unn ...more

I read this because the author is one of the hosts of the Pop Rocket podcast. At first I wasn't sure I was going to get into what seemed like a Sci-fi tale. But it turned out to be a lot more than that, a story of a family in distress, and the spaceship in the backyard was just that...something in the way. I ended up enjoying the story and how it played out.

WHAT A TREASURE. Not at all what I expected from where it started in the best way possible. The kind of book that makes you feel some intense feelings but also you are so joyful that it was able to make you feel so sad? I don't know how to explain it, just read the book, it's great.
