This is the second time I've read this book, and I liked it much better this go-round. A little more depressing than I'd like, but it was an interesting premise. Grossman's world seems more plausible than most magic worlds for reasons I can't specify. I hated most of the characters, but I still cared what happened to Quentin even when he was a douche canoe.

From the reviews I've seen, this book seems to be contemporary fantasy Marmite. Well, personally, I adored it. Yes, there are elements of Harry Potter and elements of Narnia but dealt with in a fresh way that manages to be both affectionate to the tradition and slightly cynical. I couldn't put the stupid thing down.
