[close] this is one my favorite books I've read this year. It's got hallmarks of classic fantasy, such as a fantastical realm, magic, evil. But it manages to feel new and different with different approaches to magic and to fighting the evil. Also nice to see a fantasy world that doesn't just come down to humans, elves, dwarves, goblins, orcs etc.

Shelves: nook, ya, leisure, net-galley, fantasy, fairy-tale

I love fairy tales. Like, love them. So I stuck with this book even after a) it is established that the main character is really clumsy and b) she gets chosen to be "sacrificed" even though there was nothing special about her...or is there?

I stuck through these kinda tired tropes partly because of how much I love fairy tales and partly because fairy tales themselves make use of clichés like this, so it was more of a stylistic thing than just a lazy storyteller.

A decent story that entertained me for a couple days. A lot more happened in the story than I expected. I don't think the Dragon was as fleshed out as he could have been. And I'm never a fan of full sex scenes in YA books, so there's that. But as I said, entertaining, so 3 stars for that. ...more
