Shelves: bronte-sisters
An enjoyable read. It does not have the passion or intensity of her sisters books Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights. However, the simple story of a woman trying to earn money for her parents by working as a governess is well written. Some things do not change after 250 years such as spoilt children and people trying to find happiness through what they possess.

Anne Bronte by Charlotte Bronte:



Partly autobiographical, this book is an insight into the mind of this gentle author who died too soon. Based on Anne's own experiences as a governess, which at the time was a poorly recompensed job. Mr Weston in the story is believed to be based on William Weightman who had the same beautiful spirit and it is thought Anne was in love with. He served the poor ceaselessly and died of cholera.

The novel comprised as a diary of an adolescent and then young woman Agnes Grey having to take the governess career out of her family's sudden poverty. The story starts rather well with the vivid description of the young governess' sorrows but then slacks into more diary-like style. One thing keeps me asking though, what has become of Miss Murray? ...more
