This was written at the beginning of Victor Hugo's career and at times it shows...Not to the great standard of Les Miserables which he wrote in old age, but still a book worthy of reading.

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. It is fiction at its best, a work of art at its finest, and a most eloquent condemnation of mankind and its inane superstitions. Evil comes in many guises, and within these pages it is the church in its crusade against witchcraft, the abuse of royal power, and it is even found in the shallowness and ignorance of a libertine soldier who spurns a woman who loves him, resulting in her demise.
