A book of its era. Set around 1861 at the start of the American Civil War. Mrs March is left with her four daughters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy at home. Her husband is in the army as a chaplain. They are a family where the father lost most of his wealth. They live next door to Mr Lawerence and his grandson Laurie who becomes like a pseudo brother to the girls.
