After reading The Ember Blade several Years ago and then doing a reread of it earlier this year, I was looking forward to reading this book and finding out what happened next. Despite my reread earlier this year, I still needed a reminder of how a few people and things fit into the story, but I quickly caught up.

This book takes a darker turn from the first one. Our "heroes" (with the exception of Aren) each get darker twists, making them more grey, and thus in my opinion more interesting. With the exception of Fen, I really liked the twists--for Fen, I feel like her troubles were solved much to easily, and we never got to see her actually reach her own resolution. This was another astounding book by one of my favorite authors. I've enjoyed this series very much. I even listened to the audible of The Ember Blade after I read the novel some time back to freshen up on the story before I started Shadow Casket. I can't express how much I admire Chris Wooding's writing that is so visual and profound you can't help but put yourself right there with the characters. The story was exciting, sad, and uplifting and I cannot wait until for the next installment.
