Shelves: thriller

I loved this book. It was a delightfully twisted thriller. It had everything. Fast paced action, mystery, a compelling plot, crazy characters, and shocks and twists aplenty.

This book was so good I was actually sad when it ended!

Rating: 5 stars.

Audio Note: The audiobook was fantastic. Kirby Heyborne gave a real Able Andy performance as Nick, while Julia Whelan turned in a fantastic performance worthy of Amazing Amy.

Reviewing this book is certainly no easy feat, as it's difficult for me to quantify how I feel about the experience of reading it. It induced in me a veritable rollercoaster of emotions, ranging from incredulity, to anger, and onwards to outright fury at some of the twists and turns and the actions of some of the characters.

Gone Girl opens in Carthage, Missouri, on the morning of Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. For a young, attractive couple, any wedding anniversary would be cause for celebration but when Amy Dunne goes missing early in the morning, the firestorm that is sparked will change the lives of those in its direct path forever. Amy's husband, Nick, is far from what one would consider a "husband of the year," and the deck is quickly stacked against him as the police and public opinion quickly labels him a potential wife-killer. Gillian Flynn truly excels here in creating a suspenseful atmosphere as the reader follows Nick taking in the information surrounding his wife's disappearance, and the audience is left wondering what exactly happened to Amy Dunne?

This book is at its heart, a tense psychological thriller as the audience struggles to put the pieces together alongside the characters as the disappearance case of Amy Dunne unfolds. I have to admit it: I was totally hooked from the start. I had to know what happened. When I wasn't reading, I was thinking about the characters, and the story and speculating on what I thought was going to happen next, and what exactly happened to Amy Dunne. I couldn't get it out of my head. Even when I finished it, I was left to ponder the ending and what exactly the nuclear fallout that was this story meant for the characters.

This story is incredibly hard to review, as the twists and turns present in it are ones that I feel like should be kept safe for future readers to enjoy, so I don't want to accidentally spoil anything. At its heart, Gone Girl is definitely a psychological and suspense thriller, and any fan of the genre should enjoy it and its dark storyline.

That being said, I will say that my thoughts on the ending nearly made me bring my rating down one star. I was left a little unfulfilled, as events I had hoped would unfold, didn't. But upon further thought, I've kind of realized that it was the perfect and only possible ending given the events that had unfolded up until that point.

What a dark, and disturbing, and wholly entertaining tale. I'd wholly recommend it to anyone who considers themselves a fan of the suspense genre. ...more

This was a big fat what the fuck for me.

I've tried to read this book multiple times, both the original copy and the translation. If I liked the writing in the original one and hated the translation, I could blame that, but no, the writing style simply sucks. Amy's diary is boring as hell, Nick's point of view is awful (shape of her head? Really?) and the only thing that keeps you reading is the curiosity factor (and, in my case, the fact that I don't like returning library books unfinished). Des ...more

Umm...wow...

I didn't think this book would be so difficult to put down...well actually to stop listening to. I will say that had I been reading this book rather than listening to it I might have gotten bored with it but the audiobook was very well done.

It's hard to review a book like this without spoilers, and there are so many potential spoilers here. Needless to say this book kept me guessing in quite a few places and then left me somewhat shocked at the end.
