I guess this is Flynn's schtick, unlikable characters.
Frankly, the first half of this book was slow and I was bored. There is a massive shift about halfway through and the second half really cooked.

Wow. Judging by how much I despise the main characters, and by how much I did not want to continue reading this book because it made me feel physically ill, I probably should have rated it with one star. But... it's brilliant. I love the way it's written. I love the way the story is set up and I loved the unreliable first POV narrator. The plotting, the prose, everything is impressive.

Oh, oh, those people are CRAZY!

This should be the text book on "Letting your story get away from you" and "How not to write an ending."
I couldn't put it down until about the 95% mark, and then I stopped caring. That's not great.

I am still thinking about this book days after finishing it but I haven't decided whether or not I like it. The beginning was a little slow but not unnecessary. The middle got exciting with the twists and craziness. The ending just sucked. By the end, things just seemed ridiculously implausible which killed the rest of the book for me. I might have loved this book with a different ending. Maybe the movie ending will be more to my liking (if I get around to seeing it). I have so many thoughts on

I had already seen the movie before reading the plot. So I was aware of whatever happens in the book. But the book makes the characters feel much more shallower than they are portrayed in the movie. In the movie, I felt sympathy for all the characters, but the same couldn't be said for the book characters. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. But I liked the twists and turns of the plot. I haven't read a book in a while which kept me so captivated.

It was well written and definitely kept me guessing, as well as thinking about it long after the last page. But it was also profoundly disturbing. I've never read less likable characters, so I suppose that's an achievement in and of itself. ...more
