This one starts off still with a YA tone. But I feel like as the story goes on and the world they live in is described, it gets much darker. We all talk about Aelin’s journey and growth but this read I really noticed Dorian’s. I mean he really starts to question his father’s rule and the choices that are being made. He also finds out he has powerful magic and what that could mean for him and his future. His inner debate about right and wrong and standing up for himself was really interesting to This one starts off still with a YA tone. His inner debate about right and wrong and standing up for himself was really interesting to read about. It also showed a hint of what he is in later books. I do think by him letting Aelin go because of how she looked at Chaol was a real show of character growth. I also find it interesting that the girl didn’t pick the prince this time. As it’s quite popular in many stories at least. For Chaol and Aelin, I never really liked them together because Chaol always drove me crazy. His self-righteousness and blind obedience was so intense that it lead to his destruction of his relationship with Aelin. Not that he is the blame for Nehemiah’s death but that just proved he wouldn’t pick Aelin over his duty. I am quite impressed that SJM still managed to make me feel something as their relationship progressed. I can’t stand the man 😂. I think Chaol was the right man for who Aelin was at time not who she will grow to be. Chaol wanted a wife not a warrior. I think that was proven when he saw her slaughter the group that kidnapped him. Even though she did it for him. I think reading about Aelin memories in the camp and her pain really sets up future pain and decisions she makes in future books. “This was not a fight for escape” really resonated with me. Can we just talk about all the foreshadowing that’s in this book. Valg, Iron Teeth, portals, wings in the mountains, and headaches that people with magic are having. I mean I just could go on and on. So many things I didn’t pick up on in the first or even second read. They are mentioned so casually that at least for me, I didn’t realize how important they’ll be in future books. And of course finally the big reveal at the end of the book. The first time I ever read it, I squealed like a little girl. I did not put it together. Can’t wait to read the next one. ...more

Honestly, this is where the series should have started. I am officially disowning throne of glass. This is so much better than that.

And truth be told not a whole lot of stuff from the first book was really even essential to this one. The competition was lame and boring and so why not just start as the kings champion and go from there? Also the characters were done pretty poorly in book one and they are vastly improved in this.
