Enjoyed it to the max. My fav parts are: The monotones, the encounters with Zak, and the world building!

Not gonna lie, I had very low expectations going into this one. Once you get past all the world-building, which seems a wee bit dull at times, the story really takes off and the reader is swept up in the many adventures of Drizzt the Dark Elf.

I've read R.A. Salvatore before and enjoyed his books well enough--even though he was assigned a main character to kill off in Star Wars Expanded Universe, but that wasn't his fault--and I'm always reminded when I do finally pick up one of his books, that h

4 1/2 Stars.
I really didn't expect to become so involved in this book. I told a friend that Sand Dan Glokta was one of my favorite fantasy characters & she said "What about Drizzt?" This ends very good but the start was hard to get in to. I think part of this comes from it being a prequel book for the Ice Wind Dale series, which was written before it, and much of the world is already known to many readers that started with that. Still chronologically this book comes first in Drizzt's world.

Drizzt is a very alone dark elf and rejects his homeland's evil ways. In his soul, he knows it is wrong and just doesn't believe in the Spider Queen's ways. He tries to fit in but those c

1. In the Underdark, the Drow Elves have ordered their lives around the whims of their capricious and bloodthirsty spider-goddess. Violence and hatred are indoctrinated into their children from a young age and blood sacrifice is the norm rather than the exception. Nobody survives the wrath of the Drows, including other Drows. Possibly especially other Drows, since violent slaughters of entire families in order to move up in the House Rankings (TM) is common enough to warrant an official protocol ...more

Enjoyable read. Had some issues with the writing style and I felt the story had a few plot holes, but overall it was an enjoyable, easy read.
