I always love diving into a new fleshed out well written fantasy world and this was no different.
The story follows a young bastard of royal lineage as he grows up and the many hardships he has to endure and is basically like a long training montage (as many first books in a long fantasy stories are).
I liked the main characters but sometimes I felt like I didn't understand why they acted the way they did (like why Fitz so quickly came to care for Chade but was always really hard towards Burrich ...more

I can't quite bring myself to rate this 5 stars, knowing all that is to follow this, all the times Hobb will rip my heart in pieces and stomp on it over the next dozen books. But, I am certainly nostalgic for this book, the one that started it all. This is a slowww, character-driven series that will punch you in the feels again and again. You have been warned.
