"Men cannot grieve as dogs do. But they grieve for many years."
7/10
2015 was a weird year for me mentally and I think that shows from my reading. Although I read some amazing books that year and some that became favorites, other good ones fell by the wayside. This was one of those. I enjoyed it, but never picked up the next book. After a reread in 2022, I've now moved onto Royal Assassin. We will see what I think there.
This was enjoyable to reread. I like Fitz and the writing flows well and i ...more

Geeze... nothing quite like almost crying at work... note to self, don't read Robin Hobb in public. At least there was a tiny bit of happiness at the end.

Well! My first adventure onto Robin Hobb's Six Duchies is done.
Since back then when i was a sucker for Top 10, 100, 1000 lists, I knew that one day I'd have to read this book.
AND I FUCKING ENJOYED IT!
I think that 46,5% of my fondness for this book came from the Micro-Cosmos approach the author gave to the protagonist's first story, I mean, I'm a little tired of 'larger-than-life-chosen-ones-impossible-quests' by the end of the day. It's nice to have a insecure boy slowly developing his personali ...more

****** Second read in 2023 yielded 5 magnificent stars, but really, I am giving it ALLLLL the spectacular stars EVER!!!!!
****** First read in 2019 yielded 4 glorious stars!!!!
Nina, another reviewer, said it best: "All I want to say is that Fitz is a remarkable protagonist, with qualities that are not all that common among typical fantasy heroes, and the plot is stunningly clever." - Fitz is absolutely wonderful, and the plot is exactly as described ... stunning and so so so SO clever!!!

Fitz, bastard of Prince Chivalry is a character that speaks to me. This first book had me hooked from the very beginning due to this mere fact. I have a soft spot for bastards, cripples and dwarfs. The ending of this book still has my mind reeling so i am choosing to think on my words and come back to you all later.

Gave it 5 stars....probably more like 4.5 because it was a bit slow in the beginning....but I just ended up loving this book so much! The characters really make you love or hate them and it absolutely leaves you begging for more. I have never been much of a fantasy reader but will finishing out this series for sure.

It was seriously excellent, there's nothing else I can say. Looks like I've got a new favourite author.
