I've had Robin Hobb on my list of authors I simply must read for a few years now, but haven't had the opportunity to get my hands on one of her books until this month. I'm actually kind of glad that I waited as long as I did, if I'm honest, because in a way I think finishing this book required a patience and maturity on my part that I probably would have lacked had I tried to accomplish reading it years ago when it first started ...more

Geeze... nothing quite like almost crying at work... note to self, don't read Robin Hobb in public. At least there was a tiny bit of happiness at the end.

Well! My first adventure onto Robin Hobb's Six Duchies is done.
Since back then when i was a sucker for Top 10, 100, 1000 lists, I knew that one day I'd have to read this book.
AND I FUCKING ENJOYED IT!
I think that 46,5% of my fondness for this book came from the Micro-Cosmos approach the author gave to the protagonist's first story, I mean, I'm a little tired of 'larger-than-life-chosen-ones-impossible-quests' by the end of the day. It's nice to have a insecure boy slowly developing his personali ...more

Loved it.
Wow, this book was awesome. Robin Hobb's writing style was a bit difficult to get used to at first but I quickly fell in love with it as the book progressed.
Fitz has a tough life. All through the book he works and works for this and that and just doesn't have much success. I think that's one of the things that endeared me to him so much. He had so much going against him the whole story and yet it never truly kept him from continuing along with his life.

Fitz, bastard of Prince Chivalry is a character that speaks to me. This first book had me hooked from the very beginning due to this mere fact. I have a soft spot for bastards, cripples and dwarfs. The ending of this book still has my mind reeling so i am choosing to think on my words and come back to you all later.

Gave it 5 stars....probably more like 4.5 because it was a bit slow in the beginning....but I just ended up loving this book so much! The characters really make you love or hate them and it absolutely leaves you begging for more. I have never been much of a fantasy reader but will finishing out this series for sure.

It was seriously excellent, there's nothing else I can say. Looks like I've got a new favourite author.
