A very-well written book that's not the usual, boring history text. The author views events and turning points in Rome's history in a way that's hard to find in other books about Rome. In particular, the author tries to understand what drove the Romans to believe in their "exceptionalism." While not explicit, the book may be viewed as an introspection into the evolution of the British and American empires.
