I thought the first half was much better than the second, which tended to drag. I didn't know much about the book before starting it for a book group. I was expecting a dry history, but was pleasantly surprised by the narrative style, and the quite moving and important stories of the horrors of sharecropping, lynching, and segregation in the south. This definitely wasn't quite what I was expecting---I tend to read histories that are more academic and less narrative---but it was really well done, and I think the narrative focus on a couple people's life stories worked well and was worthwhile. It's a bit embarrassing that it's taken me this long to read the book, given I've had it on my bookshelf for about seven years now.
