What Members Thought

Some of my students have selected this book for reports and presentations over the years . Just to be clear, they are non-native speakers of English. Sometimes they select the book because it is short. I don't think they realize how intense it is , until they get into it, but few have ever regretted choosing it. I require them to read at least one novel by an American, preferably still-breathing female writer of color, not because I personally dislike the classic Dead White Males, but because sa

I teetered on the line of 3 and 4. While I didn't want to put the book down, I didn't find it WOW, so no 5. I enjoyed reading the book, and I would recommend it, but I didn't feel compelled to reread it. I'll keep it on my shelf, so it's not a 2. I went with 3, only because there is no 3.5.

I don't know what I was expecting, but this book didn't really deliver for me. I enjoy Morrison's way with words and I really like some of the messages in the story, but not too crazy about the redundant themes. Maybe it's just me. I would recommend the book.

This book really made an impact.. when I tried to summarize in my mind what I felt about this book, the excerpt from the NYT review on the back said it for me: "..so charged with pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry."
