The story—which I certainly imagine must have been shocking to many of its initial readers—is well constructed and patiently told. I didn’t really love the writing, but the characters, and in particular the change in Edna’s character—were very well developed.

Absolutely brilliant! This and Jane Eyre, talk about strong Victorian women!

First, the writing is beautiful. The tale itself is difficult for modern women to read because it's hard to even imagine how limiting Edna's life choices were. In many ways it reminds me of Middlemarch -- what happens when a woman who wants more is confined to a life of less. It is pretty amazing that a book I rated a 1 as a teen is now a 5, but that's what age does for one.
