I have left this a while since finishing while trying to organise my thoughts about this book. Amidst the mass of 4 and 5 star ratings which lead me to read this, (and glad I did) I'm plunking down 3 stars. The book feels like an unfinished catharsis, written -and well written- by a survivor of the Vietnam war. My nephew was reading this book for a High School class and I liked the title so I picked it up. When I was his age (or maybe a little older), I read quite a few books focused on WWII and the Korean War. The stories I read were mostly about the good guys against the bad guys. This book did not have good or bad guys, just a lot of guys trying to make it through a horrible conflict any which way they can. It was kind of hard for me to read at times. Almost despite myself, I was engrossed in this book. Some parts gave me chills. Even though the author clearly and cleverly plays with what is "truth," reality, and story when it comes to war, after a while my enchantment broke.
