What might have happened if Kennedy hadn't been assassinated? That premise, the "Twilight Zone" feel, the dense period detail sucked me right in. I did find the middle overlong -- the pacing lagged at times. The real monsters here are not fantastical creatures but us. I like insights that King drops into his book, little moments of recognition or observations of human nature that ring true for me.

I read this book several years ago and still find myself thinking about it - Now that is the sign of a really good book! The Kennedy assassination was a watershed moment in my life. I had just seen President Kennedy when he came to our small Southern town to dedicate our new dam. My Dad was running for mayor at that point so we had excellent and got to shake the President's hand. The characters are very interesting in the storyline that circles around the assassination. Excellent!

My first Stephen King book. I didn't want it to end.

Finally, a Stephen King story with an ending I can really get behind! I've always said The Shining was my favorite King novel - and it still may be - but this is a close second. Of course not entirely historically accurate (it's fiction, people) but King takes creative license to drive the story and it works so well.
