The Feminine Mystique meets Oliver Twist meets, well, chemistry.
What a fun read!

This is a book with (almost) everything: a bit of a love story (but not dominated by that, despite the romance novel look to its title and cover), a bit of #metoo, a romp through the challenges of parenting, and an indictment of sexism in academia and the culture generally while satirizing the general culture of research institutions, the media, and, well, culture. Love, science, and a bit with a dog named Six-thirty. This is a charming, inspirational, and moving story with well-developed, authentic characters. I was able to anticipate some of the major plot points, but it didn't matter at all- it was more like I knew (or thought I knew) things before the characters did, so I wasn't at all bothered. There was a lot I liked about this. The dog was the best. The main character was quirky but a bit unrealistic for a woman in the 50s.

I enjoyed this despite the occasional outlandish parts. I loved the overall feminist theme. The characters were each were either enjoyable or truly despicable. Everyone seems to have a general consensus that Six thirty was the best character with his endearing and pensive commentary.
