Loved it! As much as ai enjoyed the human characters, I think I enjoyed “Six-thirty” the most!

“The hydrogen bond-the most fragile….I call this the ‘love at first sight bond’ because both parties are drawn to each other based solely on visual information: you like his smile, he likes your hair. But the you talk and discover he’s a closet nazi and thinks women complain too much. Poof. Just like that the delicate bond is broken. That’s the hydrogen bond for you ladies - a chemical reminder that if things seem too good to be true, they probably are.”

I initially thought this book was a rom-com when I heard about it until my mom told me I had to read it. My mom does NOT read rom-coms. I read this book, and while it was a bit predictable in parts, it was a lot of fun to read and it made me really angry about how the main character, Elizabeth Zott, was treated. I didn’t love this book. I have a hard time with books using 21st century culture and norms and assuming it was like that in the 50’s. It felt disingenuous. Elizabeth was too much of a caricature, and she was unlikeable, at that. Also, I guess I missed the humor? I’d give it 2.5, rounding up.

I enjoyed this despite the occasional outlandish parts. I loved the overall feminist theme. The characters were each were either enjoyable or truly despicable. Everyone seems to have a general consensus that Six thirty was the best character with his endearing and pensive commentary.

Brilliant read. One that will stay with me for a while. A must read for all, I will definitely pass this on to my daughter when she is old enough, an inspiring main character and an excellent portrayal of women’s issues, many still relevant today.

I had to think this over. Firstly, this book was entertaining. Was it silly? Was it important? Is there such thing as historical… magical realism? Can’t wait to see what else the other brings us.

Six-thirty is the best dog character ever! Love, love him and he is based on Garmus'own dog. The experiences of Elizabeth Zott will hit home for many women. ...more
