Books like this are what I like to call "great and dreadful." It reminds me of the kind of literature, film, and music I admired as a teenager and college student (e.g. J.D. Salinger, Wes Anderson) but without the endearing charm. The writing is not without skill and there is a lot to unpack, but it's so incredibly bleak and depressing that I'm not sure it's worth it. I didn't know what this book was about when I started reading it. I knew it had great reviews and I thought it would be "literary" - not sure why. Maybe based on its cover and maybe its readership. I had heard of it from the "literary" crowd.
