Books like this are what I like to call "great and dreadful." It reminds me of the kind of literature, film, and music I admired as a teenager and college student (e.g. J.D. Salinger, Wes Anderson) but without the endearing charm. The writing is not without skill and there is a lot to unpack, but it's so incredibly bleak and depressing that I'm not sure it's worth it. I liked the writing in much of this book more than rating would indicate, but, for me, parts of the story were not compelling.
Fresh, witty, female, Irish bravado. Painful, universal, highly literate twenty-something. Love her writing.
I didn't know what this book was about when I started reading it. I knew it had great reviews and I thought it would be "literary" - not sure why. Maybe based on its cover and maybe its readership. I had heard of it from the "literary" crowd.
