The book is told mostly as a flashback (it’s about a seven-year-old boy, but the boy’s story is remembered by a middle-aged man). A man (he has no name) revisits memories from his past after attending a funeral and he ends up at his childhood home. As he sits next to the pond at the end of the lane (the Hempstock women always referred to it as an ocean), he begins to recall events of when he was seven years old. I did something while reading this book that I literally never have while reading a book. I came to a line that so astounded me ( for those who have read the book it was when the main character questions "like I always do?") that I read it out loud to myself. I don't mean I went back and read it out loud. I read it out loud as I was reading along. I was that immersed in the book and shocked by the statement.

The writing is really good, but it was a three-star book for me for most of it (just not necessarily my favorite kind of story I guess). Then I read the last couple of chapters, and the writing was just amazing and made me want more of this story. I initially gave this an extra star for that, but the more I've thought about it... It's more like 3.5 stars for me. Really good writing--just not the story for me.

This was fantastic! I honestly didn't want it to end. There was a HEA, but I wanted more. I would seriously love to see this go into a trilogy.
