What Members Thought
I've never been intrigued by this story. Perhaps it was because of the 1935 Clark Gable movie though I barely recall it.
Finally got around to reading the original and it's a classic well worthy of the time and the attention. Now that I've read it, I'm guessing that I should move on to The Art of Racing in the Rain but perhaps I should wait a bit. It's almost unfair to ask Garth Stein to compete with Jack London

I had never read this classic work, and the most striking part of the story is how much our concepts have changed in the treatment of animals. The initial portion of the story is quite difficult to read, but the story is quite true to the time period, and no doubt accurate. I’m quite happy I didn’t live in that era.
This is a classic with good reason, it’s riveting, despite the non-PC content, and although it’s about a dog, it somehow feels like a story about humanity.

This was a little rough at both the beginning and the end of the book. I read it in a day, though, and for the most part, it was a great book that was hard to stop reading. I don’t really like books that are told from the animal’s POV, but this felt different. It was easy to get invested, and I didn’t feel like the author was trying to get into the animal’s head and thoughts, which usually just seems silly and hard to relate to. I liked this a lot.
