this is a very reluctant 3 star rating, because i thought this story was phenomenal.

t and t and t centralizes around two people who find each other at a very young age, their love of video games bonding them for life, and the reality of the pressures you face in a niche business. it tackles family dynamics, sexism, racism, death, illness, abuse (zevin was not shy in throwing the whole kit and caboodle of touchy topics in here) with what i thought was a lot of grace and realism. i was very inves this is a very reluctant 3 star rating, because i thought this story was phenomenal.

t and t and t centralizes around two people who find each other at a very young age, their love of video games bonding them for life, and the reality of the pressures you face in a niche business. it tackles family dynamics, sexism, racism, death, illness, abuse (zevin was not shy in throwing the whole kit and caboodle of touchy topics in here) with what i thought was a lot of grace and realism. i was very invested in the story, and i thought it was written really well, and very uniquely. i’m not sure i have read any fiction novels with this brand of prose.

however — a couple of things really stood out to me that made me like it but not love it.

- i found sadie to be absolutely exhausting. i am not sure if the author’s aim was to make all of the characters a little bit unlikable in different ways, but that definitely is what made them likable: all of their flaws and humanity that the reader can relate to in some way. however, sadie felt so incredibly unlikable to me, and quite immature even as they age forward into their 30s, that i didn’t really like much about her character at all.

- i did not like *the* video game chapters — don’t @ me, i have heard from multiple people that your individual opinion on these chapters will be divisive.

- at a big turning point in the book where a tragedy strikes, the story went very downhill for me, and i felt almost like it was being written by a different person, and i struggled to get through the last 1/4 of the book.

- and lastly, but not leastly, while all of the video game references and jargon didn’t bother me at all, i was really put off by all the unnecessary quirky word choices to describe something pedestrian. it felt pretentious for no reason, and while i would consider myself to have a pretty strong grasp on ostentatious vocab, it was irritating to have to look up words during every chapter. it didn’t feel very accessible and took me out of it quite a bit. jejune? come on dude.

anyway, i would still recommend this book because i liked it for the most part. ...more

Un libro sobre amistad! Me encantó el libro, la escritura de Zevin se me hizo un perfecto balance entre accesible y bella, lo cuál no es fácil de lograr. Los personajes se me hicieron totalmente humanos, con muchas facetas, debilidades y fortalezas... Los sentí muy reales. La historia me atrapó desde el principio y si bien los personajes no los describiría como "lovable" en definitiva si "relatable". Lo recomiendo muchísimo! Y si además eres gamer, tendrás un plus en la experiencia de lectura. ...more
