What Members Thought

Oh how I adored thee...
This was beautiful, and seductive.
A caress, a whisper.

Adeline LaRue does not want this life that is laid out for her, she turns down proposal after proposal, until her parents arrange marriage with Roger. She doesn't want to marry and lose herself. She wants to be free, to live.
So she prays, to the old gods, the new God does nothing. Day in day out she prays, giving all she has yet none answer.
And time is running out.
Never pray to the gods that answer after dark
If yo ...more

I hate this book.
The best thing about this book is the story, the idea, the concept. I love the artworks and how Victoria has woven in those into Addie's life - but... they aren't real. The artworks don't exist, the artists don't exist, it's all Victoria's imagination. I'm so disappointed. It would have been so good.
This story starts in 18th century France, and the main character is pretty typical 23 years old American girl. No, no, she's supposed to be a French peasant girl in the 18th century, ...more

4.5+ so I'm torn whether to bump it up or down.
1. Transparent writing that allowed the story to move freely
2. well limned characters with foibles
3. visited 3 of my all time favorite cities (Paris, NYC, New Orleans)
4. One humdinger of a story that kept me swept up from start to end.
Missing: wisdom. I just felt like there should have been more of a takeaway... I really enjoyed this tale and it was surprising (which is pretty rare for me). We'll see, if I'm still thinking about it in a week I'll pr ...more

I thought this book was terrible. Massively overwritten Lucifer/OC Mary Sue fan fiction with every conceivable language cliche appearing at least three times. How many times can something pass/rest on someone’s lips? How often can something land on someone’s tongue? And where are the editors to rid readers of SO MANY SIMILES?
I listened to the majority of this book in a two-day binge before my book club discussion, and I’m sure that didn’t help me from being overwhelmed by the repetition in the ...more

I got pulled in by the hype around this book, and it was definitely not for me. Addie makes a deal with devil to live as long as she wants on the condition that no one ever remembers her, so she can’t have relationships or a place to call home. I disliked the character of the “god of darkness” so much and balked at his relationship with Addie. (Stockholm syndrome, much?) I thought the many chapters of Addie throughout history didn’t contribute enough to the story to make the time it took to read

This is the story of a young woman who finds herself both immortal and forgettable. Blessed to live forever, but cursed to never be able to leave a mark on the world, not even in anyone's memory. If she is out of someone's sight for more than a moment or two, they will forget they ever saw her. I've read a similar premise in "The Sudden Appearance of Hope" by Claire North, but this was much better done. My only issue with this book was the pacing--it felt like the beginning was long and drawn ou
