What Members Thought

Digging into the classics of sciencefiction, fantasy and horror. This is one I somehow never read, despite it being the blueprint for so many things I've loved.
I see a lot of Stephen King's work in this story about two kids up against a dark carnival. Also, Stranger Things.
Bradbury takes a little longer waxing poetic about the passage of time here, but overall, I enjoyed it. ...more

Loved this book! Have had it sitting on "to read" shelf for awhile. Was looking for something Halloweeny, and boy, did this do the trick! It's redundant to say Bradbury was a master. This we all know.

Okay. I read it.
I joined up with one of those Catch-Up-On-Classics groups here at Goodreads, this one called EVERYONE Has Read This but Me - The Catch-Up Book Club.
I like this group because there are nominations each month for an old classic, a newer classic, and another book which is a catch up on the catch ups.
Sooooooo this time the one book I had not read and that caught my eye turned out to be a Ray Bradbury book, and I had never read this famous author before. So I tried it.

It took me a minute to get the hang of Bradbury’s prose but once I did, I really enjoyed this tale of best friends Sam and Will and a very creepy carnival. I especially loved every page that included heroic Charles Holloway, Will’s “elderly” (at 54) father. There were some insightful passages of his dialogue that I am going to chew on a bit.
Now off to watch the movie and possibly traumatize my kids!

The mythology Bradbury creates is kind of interesting, and a few of the characters are as well. (The witch, in particular.) But I’m really not a fan of his rather florid writing style.

Read for the first time when I was middle school, this Bradbury classic has lost none of the magic I first experienced twenty years ago.
I was looking at my bookcase one night, trying to decide what to read next, when this book suddenly fell from it’s spot (where it was laying FLAT on top of some other books way in the back of the bookshelf!) to the floor in front of my feet. Being that it was written by Bradbury (who has creepy down pretty well), and being that the book is what it is, I took tha ...more

Oh dear, it was scary! Perfect Halloween story!
I love it that it was the father who was the hero of the story. I love fathers.
I love the circle story structure - the race returned everything back to normal, safe, kind and warm...

I got about 1/3 the way through this book, but it couldn't really hold my interest. The Martian Chronicles is much better, in my opinion.
