What Members Thought

The Old Man and the Sea is a novella – a short novel or a long short story. The book received the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1953. It was Ernest Hemingway's last novel published prior to his death in 1961, and one of his most popular books. Oh, how I loved this story. One of the most beautifully written books I have ever read. I loved the simplicity of this beautiful book, and I also loved Santiago's self dialogue.
It's a simple tale of a man and his fight to catch a giant fish. But yet, there's SOOOOO much more.

This is the first novel by Hemingway I’ve read and I am not impressed. This was a boring (but short) story of (you guessed it) an old man fishing on the sea. The book was under 130 pages and basically only contains his fight with a gigantic fish he’s trying to catch. Maybe I’m missing something? Why is this a classic? I will say the language is very approachable and it was an easy read.
