I've never read a Neil Gaiman book before this, though I'd had plenty of opportunity for it. I picked a couple of his books from the library a few weeks back and this was the first one I decided to read. Possibly because it's reeeaally small? Which it is, and it reads real fast too. Coraline finds a locked door in her new home which leads to nowhere. There's just a blank wall behind it. I swear I read this when I was little and was super unsettled by it, although I couldn't remember any specific details when starting the reread. Coraline isn't "scary", exactly - "creepy", rather, and it will stay with me for a long time. I did want a more dramatic ending, but the whole concept was so creative that I'm okay with the ending we got. Cats are the best.

Also, the ebook copy I read included a Q&A with Neil Gaiman at the end. This was one of the best parts of the book for me:

Such a strange little book. I read it in the spirit of Halloween…..otherwise it would have just been weird…even for a book geared for children.

Shelves: fantasy-and-science-fiction

Too creepy for young children and too simplistic for teens, this book failed to provoke my imagination or deliver a clear message, and is just all around weird.
