Shelves: work-recommendation

I listened to the audiobook, which was read by Gaiman and included original music between chapters. I found it an excellent read, both deliciously scary and heartwarming. Coraline is a peculiar, intelligent and strong female protagonist, who understands what it means to act bravely (feeling scared, but acting anyway). I enjoyed her calm rationality in the face of the book's absurd situations. I'd recommend it for older middle grade readers or anyone who enjoyed Roald Dahl's "The Witches." ...more

This is my first book by Neil Gaiman. I have American Gods, but it's so big I haven't even tried to tackle it yet.

This story starts out SO strange that I wasn't sure I'd finish it. It wasn't too long, though, before I was so engrossed in it.

A little girl moves to a new apartment with her parents. The parents are busy and Coraline is bored. There's only old folks living in the house. One day she finds a door. There's just a wall behind the door. But later the door is open and there is no wall there... she goes in and...

I'm just saying that rats are excellent diggers and can chew their way through any wood.

3.75 stars. It was good, but not great. Creepy and odd. I did like the moral to the story.

This book was lovely, dark and triumphant. I wish wish wish that I had read it as a child. It is just the kind of book that would have had a profound impact on me. As it is, it was amazing and inspiring. This, to me is what horror should be for children, less a focus on fear and more an affirmation of courage and inner strength. So cool. I realize that most people who know me hate this kind of story, but I recommend it to everyone regardless.
