I expected a book so heavy in its content and true to it's southern dialect would be heavy and slow going. I was surprised how enjoyable and effortless the book became. I think this is owed to the characters being written with such personality. Set in Georgia during the 1930's, Celie is separated from her sister during childhood and forced to marry an abusive older man. She lives an absolute nightmare of a life but as she discovers friendship, love, sexuality, and educates herself the book progr ...more
