Set in the brutal and unforgiving world of the Deep South (rural Georgia) in the 1930's the book begins with Celie as a 14 year old girl . She is regularly beaten, raped and impregnated by her stepfather, Alphonso.
Celie narrates her life through letters to God, and to her sister Nettie, as we journey with her over a 30 year period.
I had seen the movie, but never read the book. The movie was awesome, but the book is so much better. ...more
