Everybody loves this book. The New York Times loves it. The National Book Award loves it. Goodreads readers love it. Oprah loves it. I...I...feel like I've read a lot of fiction about slavery. This one is interesting because it's almost an alternate universe; in this version the railroad is an actual train, with locomotives and conductors, and there are lots of events that didn't really happen- for example North Carolina decides to execute all of the slaves within its borders and lines the roadw ...more

Shelves: historical-fiction

I’m not sure how to rate it - do I rate it based on how it’s written or how I experienced it? It’s a good book, but it’s such a TEDIOUS read! Ugh. It was awful. And I couldn’t work up enough interest in the characters to sludge through this man’s stiff writing. I will NEVER recommend this to anyone.

Beautiful writing . He does a phenomenal job portraying the gruesome reality of slavery and mindset of different people .
It is also quite a fast read .
