As a work of fiction this is probably a little too close to the truth to be described as enjoyable reading. Nevertheless, this tale of slavery and of one woman's quest for a life of freedom is an excellent read. The conditions in which slaves were expected to work and live, including their existence as chattels of the plantation owner, are described graphically. At one point in this book I found myself dreaming about it, and that is rare. ...more

This is not an easy read, but it is an excellent story: a reimagining of the Underground Railroad as a literal railroad dug underneath homes and buildings where each station seems to lead to a new idyllic life. Good pick, Oprah! It is heart wrenching, but the ending is hopeful enough that I wasn’t depressed after finishing it.
